________

About the “kind eyes” mantra:

“Dancers have two unique challenges that everyone can relate to:

We look in the mirror in our workspace to critique our bodies (sometimes for a 1-hour class, sometimes for 10 hours a day for 3 months in rehearsal).

In the entertainment industry, we are also often looking at a reflection dressed in “body conscious” clothing, looking at our fellow dancers who are also dressed this way- the mirror helps us critique not just the physicality of our art but our bodies as well.

This relationship with the mirror is unique to dancers & doesn’t exist in other art forms or industry professions.

We are increasingly on camera. We watch ourselves back, again, for the purposes of critiquing.

In the GHM intensives, we do a lot of work both in front of the mirror and on camera. Before students review their footage (which happens often in the sessions), they are encouraged to watch with “KIND EYES”.

In a nutshell, look first at what you like about what you’re doing, and think productively about how you want to adjust what you’re unhappy with.

This has repeatedly been one of the phrases and mindsets that sticks most with students for years afterward.

Whether you’re a dancer or not, hopefully this helps you breathe more easily.

The words on the sandals are written to face you when you look down at them so you are reminded to have kind eyes.

With love,

Galen”
